Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing

Oil paint on canvas board

Size: 24 x 30 x 1 cm

Tray: 33 x 38 x 4 cm

Gone Fishing began as an experiment.

I wanted to see what would happen if I built layers of paint inside a temporary frame and dragged them across the surface. There was no image in mind and no destination I was trying to reach. The painting grew out of curiosity and a willingness to respond to whatever emerged.

As the layers developed, colours mixed, textures formed, and unexpected shapes began to appear. When the temporary frame was removed, the clean edges of the central image gave way to a chaotic border of broken paint and accidental marks. Rather than correcting these surprises, I followed them.

The title came later. Looking at the finished work, I began to notice forms that suggested fish and movement beneath water. Somewhere along the way, the painting acquired the title Gone Fishing.

Today I still enjoy the painting for its sense of play. It reminds me that some of the most interesting things happen when a plan gives way and the paint begins to lead.
