Sunflowers in all their vibrant, unapologetic presence, always make me want to smile. In this piece, I wanted to capture that bold spirit while exploring the creative potential of oil paint itself. The thick, sculpted paint at its heart reaches outwards, creating a sense of visual tension with the flat, angular ‘seeds’ radiating from it. To add further depth and rawness, I carved directly into the Gessobord panel, revealing the earthy wood that underpins the flower’s naturally exuberant display.
I hope that, like the flower that inspired it, the tactile nature of this painting sparks a smile and a sense of playful discovery in those who see it.
