The Morning After the Night Before is a self-portrait born out of those years when one bottle of wine was never enough. The open eye, the closed one, the rust greens, browns and blacks, the dry, coarse surface created by multiple layers of pigment soaked in oil, all perfectly reflect what it felt like on those regular “mornings after the night before”.
I’m glad those years are behind me, but whenever I look at this painting, I’m reminded of all the crazy, happy adventures too, and it makes me smile. I hope that it will make you do so too.
