The Silver Beast of Conquest
The Silver Beast of Conquest
Oil paint on linen
Size: 30.5 x 40.5 x 2 cm
Framed: 35 x 46 x 3.5 cm
Inspired by my travels in Latin America, “The Silver Beast of Conquest” reflects on the brutal legacy of colonialism in the region, fuelled by an unquenchable thirst for silver. The monstrous, clawing form, dragging itself across the canvas, embodies the relentless European pursuit of this precious metal.
The painting’s blood-red hues symbolize the violence unleashed, the bruised blues represent the cultural devastation, and the earthy browns stand for the stolen lands and exploited resources.
Sadly, “The Silver Beast of Conquest” is not just a reflection on the past. It’s a stark reminder that even today, the quest for riches continues to drive conflict and exploitation worldwide. The monstrous silver beast also echoes the contemporary wars waged over land, oil, precious minerals, ideology, or religion. It serves as a reminder of the enduring nature of greed and the need for all of us to question the cost of unchecked ambition.
