During a visit to London’s West End – the heart of ‘theatre land’ – I was reminded that, way back in the mists of time, I worked there at the Aldwych Theatre. First, as an usher while I was at drama school. Then, a couple of years later, as a professional actor. Having only recently decided to stop performing in schools, I found myself mulling on that old chestnut, ‘what might have been?’. This self-portrait emerged from those musings. By rendering it in inverted colours, reminiscent of negative film, I aimed to convey the sense of alternate realities, the paths not taken, and the choices that shape one’s life.
