During a trek through a remote mountain region of Mexico, I stayed with an indigenous community accessible only on foot. The only water available came from springs high in the mountains and was carried through a network of hoses that passed from household to household, each family taking what it needed before reconnecting the flow. The ingenuity of the system, and the generosity of the people I met there, left a lasting impression.
One night, sleeping outside beneath an immense sky filled with stars, I awoke and saw a bright light filling the next valley. At first I assumed it was artificial, but then I realised it was the moon. The moonlight was so bright and the landscape around us so dark that for a moment I really felt as though I could reach out and touch it.
