I first met Pat more than thirty years ago through my theatre work in the schools where she was teaching, and we remained in touch over many years.

What drew me to this portrait was not fashion but character. When I paint a portrait, I often find myself slipping into actor-in-search-of-a-character mode. Pat had commissioned the hat herself from a young Italian hat maker in London. It was a bold choice that clearly captured an aspect of her personality. I wanted to celebrate that creative side of her.

I also designed and made the frame for this painting.
