The Leader of the Pack

The Leader of the Pack

Medium: Oil paint on linen
Size: 30 × 40 × 1.8 cm
Framed: 35 × 45 × 3 cm

I met The Leader of the Pack and his dogs in the small village of San Pedro de Atacama in the Atacama Desert, just as I was about to leave Chile and head over the mountains into Bolivia.

His gaze and the dreadlocks woven with fabric and beads were unmissable, but what really stayed with me was his relationship with his six large black dogs.

At one point, two of them began fighting. He snapped at them, and they immediately stopped and moved apart.

Hence the painting’s title.

It would have been fun to get to know him better, but my ride arrived before I had the chance. I wonder if he and his unforgettable pack are still hunkered down in the desert.
