During my travels through Morocco, I encountered this remarkable man—a former French Foreign Legionnaire. His weathered face, which hinted at untold adventures, immediately drew me in. Although our conversation was limited due to the language barrier, we shared a drink, and he allowed me to photograph him.
In this painting, I aimed to capture more than his striking appearance. The tight mouth and upturned nostril suggest disdain—perhaps for my fancy camera or my easy, backpacker’s life, clearly a far cry from the one he had led. Yet, beneath that impression, I sensed something deeper: a quiet resilience and a wealth of life experience.
