Will he smile? Won’t he? I met this gentleman in Morocco and was instantly drawn to his timeless presence, which seemed to transcend the centuries. And to the warmth in his eyes. Initially hesitant, he then burst into a wonderful, friendly smile. In painting his portrait, I wanted to celebrate our brief encounter. I handmade the frame in wood, mirroring the old, historic site with mud walls where we met.

I chose the title, “The Gatekeeper”, to reflect his occupation guarding his country’s history and culture. But more so, because his presence hinted at a world of untold stories, of which he alone was the gatekeeper. I hope this painting offers you a glimpse into another life and culture and sparks your curiosity about the tales he holds.
